Shovelling Contest
MELBOURNE, September 25
Lino Brenz-Verca, a 31-year-old West Australian gold miner, today won the first Australian speed shovelling contest. Using a broad maize shovel. Brenz-Verca scooped a ton of half-inch blue metal into a special hopper in two minutes 26 seconds, with 106 shovelfuls. Brenz-Verca’s time was 49sec slower than his West Australian best but 22 seconds faster than the runner-up's time.
