PARLIAMENTS DIARY

In a day of steady but unspectacular business yesterday, the House of Representatives materially shortened the order papers, which at the beginning of the afternoon contained 48 items.

After formal business, which included the asking of seven questions and the tabling of the annual report of the National Provident Fund Board, twelve measures were read a third time and passed. They were: The Harbours Amendment Bill, the Valuers Amendment Bill, the Fisheries Amendment Bill, the Government Life Insurance Amendment Bill, the Occupational Therapy Amendment Bill, the Marriage Amendment Bill, tbe Immigration Restriction Amendment Bill, the Atomic Energy Amendment Bill, the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, the State Supply of Electrical Energy Amendment Bill, the National Savings Amendment Bill, and the Local Authorities Loans Amendment Bill. Three others, the Crimes Bill, the Summary Proceedings Amendment Bill, and the Criminal Justice Amendment Bill, were granted a second reading pro forma and passed to the Statutes Revision Committee.

Mr N. G. Pickering (Government, St. Albans) was granted a further four days’ leave of absence through illness.

A report on the Land Settlement Promotion Amendment Bill was received, and the date of its third reading set down.

The House spent the evening in the committee stages of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill. The House had not concluded the committee stages of this bill when it adjourned at 10.30 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. today.
