ANTARCTIC WEATHER
Meteorologists Confer
Meteorologists who will be assisting with operations in the Antarctic this year, yesterday met Mr T. I. Gray, of the International Antactic Analysis Centre, Melbourne. They will meet him again today. Mr Gray, who was in charge of the weather station at Little America in the Antarctic last year, has had 400 days’ experience of Ross Sea weather, which he emphasised was of great importance to meteorologists studying weather conditions for information on the areas to be flown over this summer.
Mr Gray flew from Melbourne on Tuesday for a round-table discussion yesterday with meteorologists assembled at Harewood.
As well as United States Navy and Air Force meteorologists, he met Mr lan Kerr, officer in charge of the General Forecasting Office, Wellington, and Mr L. Larsen, officer in charge of the Auckland Meteorological Office.
“There are several men this year who have not had experience in this area,” said Mr Gray, “and these meetings are an orientation course for them. We are all going to try to set up a reasonable programme of what we can be expected to tell the pilots of aircraft flying in the Antarctic and between New Zealand and the ice.” Mr Gray said the United States and Australia were the only nations who had so far contributed men to the analysis centre at Melbourne, although others were contributing information, it was expected, he said, that other nations with parties in the Antarctic might contribute to the centre later.
