MAINTENANCE OF ROADS
Expenditure By Board l New Zeaiana Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, September 18. A total of £1,506,914 was spent on maintenance of highways throughout New Zealand during the period from April 1 to August 31, and £2,342,906 was expended on highway construction in the same period, according to a statement tabled at today’s meeting of the National Roads Board. The corresponding totals for the same period in 1958 were £1,505,453 and £2 174,176 respectively. Maintenance for motorways in the period this year was £13,606, State highways maintenance totalled £1,232,584 and that for main highways amounted to £260.724.
Construction on motorways totalled £431,200, on State highways £1,555,309, and on main highways £356,397. Almost all highways expenditure for the period this year totalled a greater sum than for the 1958 period. Almost £12,000 more was spent this year on major bridge repairs. Flood damage and maintenance expenditure showed a drop of £81,481, however.
