Salmon-Fishing In The Arctic
ALTA (North Norway). The Duke of Roxburghe has arrived by air in this Arctic Circle town for salmon fishing in the Alta river. His great grandfather signed the first five-year contract for
fishing the district in 1862, and presented a chandelier to Alta church.
The original contract stipulated that the Duke should give three vaag (120 pounds) of salmon to each of 109 signatories yearly, plus an annual cash payment of 350 daler, and a further payment of eight shillings for each pound of salmon below the required total.—Reuter.
