Gordon Cup Soccer

THE Canterbury soccer team has every chance of regaining the Gordon Cup at English Park this afternoon. Wellington, the present holder, drew 2-2 with the local team in the first of the two annual home-and-away fixtures at the Basin Reserve in May. Since then the record of the Wellington team has been unimpressive. It has lost 0-2 to Otago, 2-4 to Auckland, and 2-6 to Costa Rica. The Wellington selector (Mr A. Longbottom) has made many changes since the first match and Only three of the team that drew with Canterbury remain. They are the two full-backs. B. Howell

and G. McClelland, and the out-side-right, J. Bell. The experienced P. Whiting returns as goalkeeper, and J. Warrender (who was not available for the first

game) is back at right-half. The form of the Wellington forwards in club football has been inconsistent, but Mr Longbottom has selected a line which could prove very formidable if it combines effectively. A. Schryvers has replaced J. Donovan as centreforward, and two new represen-

tatives, A. Inglis and D. McCaff-

rey, will fill the inside berths. Inglis replaces R. Reid and McCaffrey takes the position of R. Kearns, who is now in Australia. Canterbury supporters will be interested to see that the former Canterbury representative, W. Logan, is back in the Wellington team at outside-left. Mr W. Carruthers, the Canterbury selector, has shown that he has plenty of confidence in his early season team and has made only minor changes. The only alteration in the defensive pattern is that A. Laffey, formerly centrehalf, has been switched to right full-back, with I. Gtaham moving to centre-half With C. Steele not available, D. Worthington has been changed to the right wing position and his inside man, P. Rennell, has also been moved to the right flank. P. Feenstra has been omitted. The left wing attack will comprise J. Price and J. Rea. After a very successful season in club football and as an under-20 representative, Rea will be playing his first game for the senior eleven. With his hard-working clubmate, Price, he should do well this afternoon.
