Speedway Titles

THIS evening 18 of the world’s best speedway riders will be meeting in London to compete for the world’s championship, and three of them will be New Zealanders, all from Christchurch. Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore and Geoff Mardon will be taking their place in a top-class field including Ove Fundon, Swedish and former world’s champion, Peter Craven, English and former world’s champion, as well as German, Dutch, Czechoslovakian, French and American champions. Barry Briggs has won the title for the last two years and should he win tonight will be the first rider to hold the title three times. Ronnie Moore has won it once before and Geoff Mardon has filled minor places twice. Both Barry Briggs and Geoff Mardon competed successfully in the last speedway season in Christchurch and Ronnie Moore has been sweeping all before him in England and on the Continent. New records are likely to be broken tonight, with more than an even chance that it will be a Christchurch rider who does the breaking.
