ORIENTAL WISDOM
The usual team spirit seemed to be sadly lacking in the Oriental Rugby Club side which visited Christchurch a few days ago to play a team from the Sumner district, consisting largely of players from the Linwood club. Oriental began the match at the Heathcote Domain in tremendous style, scoring 13 points in the first 10 minutes —three tries, two of them converted. But the effort stopped there, the players being blown long before the final whistle. The Sumner team finished with 12 points, mainly from penalty goals. But when the Oriental players arrived at “The Press’’ to provide a report of the match—an annual fixture, now six years old—they showed a deplorable lack of enthusiasm for their captain, E. J. Hart. They expressed conflicting opinions about the merits of their own players, but were unanimous in blaming their skipper for the side’s faults. Hart, who bore a shield of unorthodox design, was equal to the occasion. He condemned his players with spirit and skill. Sumner was not represented at the press conference.
