Podola Defence Rests Case

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 17. The defence yesterday rested its case on the preliminary issue of whether Guenther Pocola, charged with murdering' a policeman, is fit to plead on the capital charge. Podola, a 30-year-old Germanborn photographer, is appearing at London's Old Bailey Court charged with the murder of Detective-Sergeant Raymond Purdy, who was shot dead in the entrance to a block of flats in West London on July 13. Podola’s counsel, Mr F. H. Lawton, Q.C., contends that Podola has lost his memory of all events up to July 17, the day after he was arrested, while the prosecution alleges his amnesia is faked.

The jury has to decide whether Podola is fit to plead on the capital charge, and if so, another jury will be empanelled to try him.

The prosecution contended yesterday, that Podola was simulating amnesia for “the strongest motive in the world.”
