U.S. GRANT FOR D.S.I.R.
Purchase of Equipment For Plant Research (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 16. The Rockefeller Foundation has authorised a grant of approximately £3500 towards the payment for equipment to be used by the’ Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
The equipment, an analytical ultra-centrifuge, is to be used by the Plant Diseases Division for studies of the structure and chemistry of plant viruses, and for investigation of enzyme characteristics in plants. An enzyme is a substance which, in minute amounts, promotes chemical changes without being used up in the reaction. The ultra centrifuge should assist the investigations aimed at eliminating virus diseases in vegetable and fruit crops.
