SUDDEN RISE IN TIDE

Auckland Recording After Earthquake (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. A sudden tidal wave rise of six tenths of a foot was recorded by the remote tide recorder on the Auckland waterfront on Tuesday. The low water spring tide jumped from 3.2 ft to 3.8 ft and returned to its original level in 10 minutes. The tidal wave occurred at 1.20 p.m. on Tuesday, after a low tide of 2.2 ft at 12.10 p.m. The jumping in the tide came after reports of a large earthquake occurring near the Kermadec Islands. The reports said the earthquake, which occurred about 11 hours earlier, would be unlikely to cause a tidal wave because of the depth of water near the Kermadecs. An official of the Auckland Harbour Board said today that tidal waves were rarely recorded on the tide gauge due to the sheltered nature of the Waitemata harbour.
