WIGRAM LAND DRAINAGE

Second Priority On County List

The drainage of the Longhurst block at the R.N.Z.A.F. station, Wigram, has caused the Ministry of Works and the Air Department considerable concern, and they have had difficulty in keeping the drains open, according to a letter received by the Christchurch Drainage Board from the District Commissioner of Works (Mr A. E. Clarke). The ends of internal roads in the block were virtually a sheet of water after rain, the letter said. It would be appreciated if the board could ' give urgency to the work planned to correct the position. The board was guided by the local authority on the order of priority that such works should be given, the works committee reported to the board. Certain planning work was being done on the area when the Paparua County Council submitted its list of priorities for drainage work in the county. The board was asked to deal with Yaldhurst-Paparua drainage first, and planning work on the Wigram area was put to one side in the meantime. It was second on the county’s list, although it was too early to give a specific date when work could be commenced, the committee said. It was possible that it would be carried out in the next financial year, providing the council did not alter its list of priorities.
