IMMIGRATION OF ASIANS

Mr Hackett Replies To Question lFrom Our ParliaTnentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 10. “At no time have quotas operated for the entry into this country of any particular nationality or race, for the reason that a quota system would not be suitable for New Zealand.” said the Minister of Immigration (Mr HuCkett) today. “Applications from Asians for entry into the Dominion are considered on their individual merits.” He was replying in Parliament to a written question asked him by Mr T. L. Hayman (Opposition, Waitaki). Mr Hayman had asked whether Mr Hackett and his Cabinet colleagues supported the views of the public questions committee of the North Canterbury district synod of the Methodist Church to the effect that "quotas of Asians for immigration purposes should be extended.”
