Christchurch Society's Presentation

| Jatz enthusiasts will be able 10 see and hear the first jazz stage presentation for two years by musicians from local jazz groups when the Christchurch Jazz Society presents its concert at the Civic Theatre tomorrow night Nine combinations appear, and a wide variety I °f jazz numbers will be presented. The Jazz Society—a “strictly legitimate” group—has recently been granted affiliation with the Gnnstchurch Civic Music Council. Although it has not had a big public concert for some time the society has been active with concerts attended by members only. Many of the artists appear>ng are professional musicians well known to the Christchurch public. Among the groups performing are those of Rod Derrett Playing Dixieland, Bob Bradford, Gerry Marston, Dave Easterbrook, Dennis Bryson, and Chuck Fowler. An item with a very different approach is “New Sounds”—a chamber jazz group led by Harley Scott—which comprises electric guitar, saxophone, 'cello and double bass. Another novelty is a “two piano” act by Noel Wesney and Chuck Fowler A feature of the evening will be the appearance of a young English singer, Tommy Adler, who is now living in Wellington. Adler, who sings after the style of Mel Torme, has made a name for himself as a jazz singer in coffee lounges—“coffee shop” jazz has become an important feature in night life both in New Zealand and overseas. ■■
