BIG JEWEL ROBBERY
Heavy Safe Stolen During Party (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CAP D’ANTIBES, August 30. Police were today checking lists of guests—both invited and uninvited—at a party at the luxurious Villa Nellyric at Cap d’Antibes held the night before. More than £92,800 worth of jewels was stolen from the house.
They believe the thieves may have been among the estimated one hundred uninvited guests who “gate-crashed” the party held by the villa’s tenant, British textile manufacturer, Mr Louis R. Rawlings. Police believe the thieves joined the party to learn their way about the inside of the house, because only with this knowledge could they have known where to find the heavy safe containing the jewels, and how to take it on a complicated route through the grounds to a waiting boat. The thieves evidently arrived by boat, climbed one hundred steps to the villa —took the 1761 b safe from a bedroom and dragged it back to their boat across the lawn— leaving deep marks later found by the villa gardener. Before leaving, they helped themselves to whisky from a cabinet at the nearby boathouse.
