Debating Competition
Concluded
The 1959 debating competition of the Canterbury Council of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs concluded recently at Ashburton when the Timaru district committee (affirmative) defeated the Christchurch district committee (negative) on the subject “That farm animals be compelled to wear hats during summer.” Mr M. Murdoch, of Timaru, was judged th< best speaker by Mr S. A Laßoche. Additional results were:— Round 1 (“That a civilian land settlement scheme identical with that for returned servicemen would result in increased inflation of land values.”) Marlborough (negative) defeated Nelson (affirmative), Christchurch (negative) defeated West Coast (affirmative), Mid-Canter-bury (affirmative) deteated North Canterbury (negative). Timaru (affirmative) defeated Waimate (negative). Round 2 (“That the New Zealand railways have served thenpurpose and should be abolished ‘’).—Christchurch (negative• defeated Marlborough (affirmative), Timaru (affirmative) defeated Mid-Canterbury (negative).
