COMPETITIONS CONCLUDE
Final Awards At Timaru
(From Out Own Reporter) TIMARU. August 30. The winner of the centennial Open Aria contest, decided at the demonstration concert held in the Theatre Royal in conjunction with the Timaru Competitions Society’s centennial festival was Mrs Anne Rennie, of Christchurch. Mr Peter Law (Christchurch) was second. The judge. Mr G. E. Wilkinson, of Nelson, said Mrs Rennie, who selected a demanding aria, had given a moving performance, while the other finalist sang with “delightful artistry."
Awards were presented by the Mayor of Timaru (Mr R. E. Whiter The president of the society (Mr J. E. Thompson) said the festival was one of the most successful ever staged by the society, and he complimented the judges on their competent and thorough work. Demonstration concerts were held at St. Patrick’s Hall.
The Betty Purdom, Dorothy Drew, and Dave Voyce Challenge Cups were awarded to Lynette Brooks, of Timaru. The Janice Richardson Challenge Cup wai presented to Maurice O’Reilly.

Reading at Sight.—l 6 and over: Jill Wellman (Dunedin) 1, Erica Leadley (Hokitika)’2, Andrena Duncan (Dunedin) 3. Recitation in Character or Costume, Own Selection.—l 3 and under 16: Lorraine Newton (Dunedin) 1. Margaret Gillies 2, Lorraine Hutchins 3.
