ATOM TESTS
Russia Continues Suspension (N.Z Press Association —Copyright) MOSCOW, August 29. A Soviet Government statement said last night that Russia would not resume nuclear tests provided the West did not resume theirs. The statement, quoted by the Soviet news agency Tass, said: “The Soviet Government has resolved not to resume nuclear explosions in the Soviet Union if the Western Powers do not resume tests of atomic and hydrogen weapons.
“Only in the case of resumption of nuclear weapons tests by them will the Soviet Union be free of this pledge.
“The Soviet Union will continue the struggle for the complete cessation of nuclear weapons tests, regarding this as an important step towards ending the nuclear arms race, and averting the threat to the life and health of millions of human beings,” the statement continued.
The statement said the Soviet Government had repeatedly declared in the past, and wished to reiterate now, that it was ready “to conclude at once with the American and British Governments an agreement on the cessation of all types of nuclear testa for ever.”
