INTER-SCHOOLS FENCING

Canterbury Team's

Success

“The Press’’ Special Service WELLINGTON. Aug. 30.

The Canterbury boys’ team had a decisive win in the teams event in the first New Zealand secondary schools’ fencing championships held in the Kelburn School Hall. Teams representing Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury participated, and some excellent fencing was seen. The standard throughout was really junior national, and much credit must go to those who trained the teams. The physical fitness of the Canterbury team played no small part in its being the first holder of the Junior National Cup. Canterbury also did well in the individual championships. J. Hanna (Linwoo’d High School) won the boys’ title, and his schoolmate, A Parder, was second. There was a barrage for first, second, and third places in the girls’ championship, which was won by D. Bullivani (Linwood High School), with J. Campbell, of the same school, second.

Hanna fenced with hie usual energy and good sense of distance. The only bout he lost was to Parder in the preliminary pool of the individual championship. P. Sharp (Christchurch Boys’ High School) fenced with speed and beautiful timing to win his preliminary, and went on to the semi-final. There was little to choose between the other Canterbury boys who were all promoted to the semi-final. B Mclntyre (8.H.5.), who fenced splendidly in the teams matches, was unlucky to be the only Canterbury member not to be promoted to the final.

In the girls’ events Wellington was too strong for the other teams, and fully deserved its win. There was not the same high standard amongst the girls, but most of them have had considerably less experience. Two Canterbury girls. D. Bullivant and J. Campbell (Linwood High School) were very nervous in the early team bout, but settled down well in time to assure their promotion to the final of the individual championship. Results: — Girls’ Teams.—Wellington beat Canterbury. 12-4; Wellington beat Auckland. 11-5; Auckland beat Canterbury 9-7. Win for Wellington Bovs’ Teams.—Canterbury beat Auckland. 9-0: Canterbury beat Wellington, 8-1; Wellington beat Auckland. 7-2. Win for Canterbury.
