Hospital To Have Research Unit

The importance of medical and clinical research convinced the North Canterbury Hospital Board that the new hospital should contain a research unit It has already appointed Dr. D. W. Beaven to be in charge of this unit, and he has taken up his post in the hospital.

Medical research at Princess Margaret Hospital will be concerned mainly with clinical investigation, which means the development of new techniques and tests in investigating unusual diseases, or patients with difficult diagnoses. The laboratory facilities and equipment necessary for such research are expensive to purchase and maintain on account of increasing complexity of research. It is therefore hoped to launch a medical research committee which will be responsible for conducting an appeal for funds from voluntary sources.

Besides being a research hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital will also be a teaching institution when it is fully built

On the hospital’s top floor there are teaching rooms and an impressive clinical lecture theatre. This theatre is of strikingly modern design, having acoustic wooden panelling and curved tiered seating for 80. There is a revolving blackboard, a movie screen, and special lighting which can be controlled by the lecturer. There is also floor space for a patient on a stretcher to be wheeled in before the students.
