Five Tries, Field Goal, and Two Penalty Goals

The British Isles, defending the southern end, were penalised from the first scrum of the game when Jeeps came around a little too fast, but this advantage was nullified by a New Zealand player getting in front of Clarke as he kicked for touch, and another scrum formed on the spot In New Zealand’s first back movement Lineen stepped inside Price, but he was caught by the cover defence. The ball was kicked through deep into the British Isjes twenty-five, and McMullen and O’Reilly had a race to the ball. This ended with O’Reilly tackling McMullen as they were disputing possession. Brown was on hand to pick up and centre, and Meads took the ball well close to the Lions’ goal line, but the referee broke up the ruck that formed. The Lions had a chance to score the first points when after five minutes Scotland had a shot at goal from a penalty from halfway and well out. It fell short, however. Two minutes later Clarke missed an easy penalty goal from right in front and close to the twenty-five. Jeeps put the Lions on attack with a fine break, and O’Reilly received from him and made a splendid run down the sideline. When he was tackled, however, the movement ended in ar linefinding competition between the full-backs. Scotland had the honours. New Zealand’s first points originated from some hard rucking just outside the Lions’ twenty-five. When the ball came loose Hemi secured and put a nicely-judged cross kick to Caulton’s wing. Jackson took it and Caulton’s tackle at the same time but managed to find touch just by the corner flag. The lineout was indecisive and the referee called for a scrum. Hemi won a tight head and Urbahn ran round the blind side and drew two defenders, and Caulton went over unopposed. Clarke missed the conversion. Fourteen minutes play had gone. New Zealand 3, British Isles 0 New Zealand’s lead was shortlived, however. Jeeps made another splendid run and put a long grubber kick into touch just by the corner flag. A scrum followed an indecisive line-out but New Zealand had to force down. From the five-yard scrum the Lions’ passing movement broke down as the New Zealand backs flashed through to defend. New Zealand was penalised, however. and Faull- kicked his first penalty goal after 18 minutes.’ New Zealand 3. British Isles 3 The Lions again went on attack. From a ruck HorrocksTaylor received and made a fine run before passing to Hewitt. Hewitt, with O’Reilly outside him, raced down the embankment touch line but tried to beat Clarke and was brought down. New Zealand regained the lead after 21 minutes when from just inside half-way and close to the sideline, Clarke kicked a magnificent penalty goal.

New Zealand 6, British Isles 3. A minute later New Zealand turned defence into attack and increased its lead. Scotland kicked off straight and deep into the New Zealand twenty-five. Brown waited ’ for the ball to bounce favourably for him, but it failed to do so, and with the Lions’ forwards hot on attack he was forced to carry the ball into the in-goal area and force down. From the five-yard scrum Jeeps was penalised, and although Clarke could not find touch, Caulton was up quickly and kicked the ball away from Jackson. Lineen gained possession, ran, and then centred. From some very loose play Clarke picked up the ball and with his left foot kicked a fine field goal. New Zealand 9, British Isles 3. New Zealand pressed another attack when Brown kicked to McMullen’s wing. From loose play near the corner, however, Scotland received and raced upfield before centring. Brown was there on cover defence, however, and saved. The best try of the game came after 35 minutes’ play. The New Zealand backs, who had been racing up on the Lions on defence, on this occasion did not make allowance for the thrust of Horrocks-Taylor, who broke through close to the New Zealand twenty-five and passed to Hewitt. He quickened his stride, effortlessly raced round Clarke and scored in a position from which Faull had no trouble in converting.

New Zealand 9, British Isles 8. The New Zealand forwards drove through after some nice hand-to-hand passing, and Meads

went over well out Clarke converted with another fine kick. New Zealand 14, British Isles 8, This was the score at halftime.

Clarke’s kick to commence the second half landed in the in-goal area, and Scotland forced. Scotland used the blind side for his twenty-five kick, and O’Reilly snapped up the kick and made ground before passing to Hewitt. A promising movement died, however, when Hewitt's centring kick was taken by Clarke, who kicked for touch. The British Isles were awarded a penalty shortly after this, but Faull missed a long shot at goal. Horrocks-Taylor received from a line-out, stepped inside Conway’s tackle and threw a long but misdirected pass to Jackson’s wing. Caul ton took it on his fingertips, but was tackled. Whineray broke away with his backs in support and handed on to Lineen, but Lineen’s pass to Brown was forward, and although Brown dived over the goal-line, a scrum was called for, and from this the Lions cleared. Again the Lions commenced a passing movement but Price’s pass to O’Reilly was a poor one and the movement died.

The New Zealand forwards brought play back to the British Isles twenty-five, where New Zealand won a quick ruck. The Lions backs were caught out of position, but a smother tackle by O’Reilly prevented a try. With New Zealand still on attack, Hewitt tried to clear but Caulton took the ball well, kicked high down the touch line and chased it. He and Jeeps jumped for the ball in the comer, but it went out.

The Lions tried desperately to make up the leeway. Hewitt received and with some quicksilver side-stepping beat three defenders, but side-stepped the wrong

way to the fourth and was out His effort came after another back movement which looked likely to bring results, but Faull’s pass to Hewitt was too low and was dropped. With only 11 minutes remaining Caulton gained possession, and jinked his way through before he was tackled. The New Zealand forwards drove through and Tremain was brought down close to the line. The ball came to Urbahn, who dived over in the corner. Clarke's kick failed.

New Zealand 17, British Isles 8

Two minutes later New Zealand was penalised and from a handy position Faull missed a penalty goal. While at the New Zealand twenty-five HorrocksTaylor attempted a field goal; but this was charged down and McCullough raced down the sideline and centred. O’Reilly took the catch, but was caught in possession and Caulton was nearly over. McCullough was on hand and dived over, but the ruled a previous Infringement and a scrum was held.

With only a minute’s play remaining, New Zealand attacked in the Lions’ twenty-five. When the ball came loose Caulton raced through, scooped it up, flung himself out of a tackle and over the line. As he went over it appeared from the sideline that he flung the ball forward, but the referee ruled a try in spite of appeals to him by several of the Lions. Clarke had no trouble in converting, and the game ended a minute later with the score:—

New Zealand 22, British Isles 8.
