Basketball TITLE QUEST AT INVERCARGILL

Two Near Upsets By Wanganui

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Aug 28. Wanganui, one of the lowest rated rides in the New Zealand basketball tournament which concluded its fourth day today, almost upset both of the ‘giants” when it took Canterbury to 15-14 and Southland Major the title-holder to 29-28. It should have won both games. A wind, perhaps the strongest of the tournament, made conditions unpleasant for the good crowd which attended.

Wanganui led Southland practically throughout their game and was beaten only in the final minutes. After trailing Canterbury it finished strongly. Had the forwards been round when wanted, Wanganui would most certainly have won. Results were:—

First Grade.—Auckland 32, Hutt Valley 24; Southland Major 29, Wanganui 28; Southland Country 27, Otagd 23; Canterbury 31, Hawke's Bay 22; Rotorua 32.
