TOKEN IMPORTS OF BARRED GOODS
Wellington Chamber’s Support (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 28.
The principle of token imports of goods otherwise barred under licensing is supported by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce import committee, according to a press statement released tonight. The committee, however, reported to the chamber this week that while licences granted under basic headings for essential commodities did not fulfil all requirements. it did not recommend support for the suggestion that in no case should the 1960 provision for token imports be less than 20 per cent, of the actual imports of the same goods during 1957.
That suggestion had been put to the Minister of Customs by the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives’ Association. Mr H. E. Smith said that when New Zealand had import control of a complete nature, it was noticed that there was a tendency here not to drop off in quality of manufacture but rather in matters of design. For that reason token imports helped businesses keep abreast with latest designs.
