RESTRICTION ON DRUGS
New Direction To Doctors

The quantities of social security drugs which doctors can prescribe for patients are to be reduced from September 1 on a directive from the Health Department The directive, which has already been received by several Auckland chemists, says that with most drugs the period for which doctors will be able to prescribe will be reduced from 10 days, with a 10-day repeat, to seven days, with a seven-day repeat The directive also limits to a specified number the drugs doctors can prescribe for up to three months where the patient is on a stabilised course of treatment Until now there has been no official limitation of this practice, and doctors have been able to use their own discretion.
