Vehicle Breaks Sea-Ice
(New Zealand Press Association) SCOTT BASE. August 25. The first field trip of the 1959-60 Antarctic season almost ended in disaster to a United States Navy weasel which broke through the sea-ice on the way to Coulman Island, one of the few known Emperor penguin rookeries. The thres occupants managed to escape from the sinking vehicle. The accident occurred about 38 miles from Hallett Station.
The party which comprised five men led by a New Zealand geologist, Mr Brian Reid, and including the American leader at Hallett station, Mr Charles Roberts, left Hallett the previous day in two weasels to make the 70-mile trip to Coulman Island to collect scientific data on the Emperor penguins, band 100 adult birds, conduct a population survey and take weather observations, but after the accident the party returned to Hallett
