TRAVELS IN BRITAIN
Trip Described By Mrs E. L. Harris
Any woman who would like to go for a trip overseas, but was apprehensive about going on her own, could put her fears aside and be confident that she would be well looked after by shipping companies, travel agents and NewZealand House in London, said Mrs E. L. Harris yesterday. She described her trip to Britain to members of the women's branch of the Christchurch Citizens’ Association. Before she left New Zealand, Mrs Harris made a list of the things she had always longed to do or see in Britain and she found little difficulty and plenty of encouragement in carrying out her programme, she said. Among the highlights of her trip was a service in the Royal chapel of St. James's Palace when the Duchess of Gloucester and one of her sons attended. The service was conducted by Mrs Harris’s brother, who is Archdeacon of Manchester and a chaplain to the Queen. Once a year the Archdeacon was commanded to preach in the Royal chapel, she said. She made a journey to the island of Skye and to the lochs country of Scotland when the bluebells were in full bloom. She visited the Chelsea flower show with its many acres of beautiful blooms magnificently displayed; Kew gardens ablaze with tulips; attended a service in Canterbury Cathedral; visited Dover Castle perched on the white cliffs; and made a round of theatres in London. She saw “My Fair Lady” on her last day in England. Also on the afternoon programme was a musical quiz conducted by Mesdames Hilda Reeve and J. G. Simpson. Miss Kathleen Mangels gave vocal items. Mrs H. E. Radley (vice-presi-dent) presented Mrs Harris and Miss Mangels with bouquets of flowers. Mrs E. Rice (the president) presided.
