BAGMAN AND RUSTIC IN IMPRESSIVE SPRINT

Bagman and Rustic appeared to be well matched in a fast sprint on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. They were on terms after dashing over six furlongs in Imin 16 2-ssec, the best time of the morning for that distance. Bagman and Rustic are rival candidates for the Flying Handicap at Ashburton. Bagman was ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes, and the trainer, L. J. Ellis, rode Rustic. They ran the last' half mile keenly In 50sec.

Gay Tommy (B. W. McDonald) showed his fitness for the Ashburton Cup in a very good mile gallop with his stablemate Mozart (S. J. Martin). They ran the distance in Imin 43 4-ssec, and the last half mile attractively in 50 l-ssec.

Gay Tommy improved with each race at the Grand National meeting. His third start there was in the Islington Handicap, in which he was a creditable sixth. The stablemates Nehru (A. J. Stokes, and King Lyn (P. J. Kempton) went leisurely from the mile to the half mile, but dashed home in 50 l-ssec. Nehru should be right at his best for the Longbeach Hurdles at Ashburton.

Magic Circle (A. J. Stokes) led Corowa (G. W. Mein) by half a length ending a mile in Imin 46sec, the last half in 51 4-ssec.

Braganza (W. Hanlin) and Cadiz (A. J. Stokes) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 31 l-ssec, the last four in 50sec. They are making pleasing progress in preparation for spring campaigns. Cadiz will start his three-year-old racing in the John Grigg Stakes on the second day of the Ashburton meeting. Strong Finish Kaseno (E. G. Low) picked up several lengths from the half mile to finish seven furlongs alongside his stablemate Balance (R. E. Johnstone) and clear of Saltash (J. L. Coulter) in Imin 32sec. Balance ran his last half mile in 51 2-ssec, and Kaseno went a good bit faster. Quick Time (T. Wilson) and Bobwood (B. S. Finlayson) shaped will to record Imin 30 3-ssec for seven furlongs, the last four in 51 l-ssec. Wild Clover (A. J. Stokes) had a head to spare from the fasterfinishing Royal Halyard (B. S. Finlayson! and Shoal (C. McDonald) ending seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, the last half mile in 50sec. All three were under bustling rides in the straight. Abou Ben Adhem (T. Wilson) outfinished his stablemate Kastanea (B. S. Finlayson) in their test over seven furlongs. Kastanea was clear at the half mile, but the grey caught him close to home and beat him by a neck, recording Imin 33 l-ssec. The last half mile was run in 51. Surrend (C. T. Wilson) and Gabelle (K. Reggett) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 18 l-ssec, the last four in 50sec. Gabelle went keenly in the lead under a light weight, but Surrend reduced that lead near the end. They are form runners for the Eiffelton Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Rose of Kildare (R. W. Gould) led Awatere <S. J. Martin) by three-quarters of a length ending six furlongs in Imin 18 4-ssec, the last four in 51 l-ssec. Rose of Kildare established her lead when shaken up inside the last furlong. Bobbie Burns <L. McGuire), a smart track galloper, sprinted six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last four in 51 l-ssec.. He has not raced since last October, but is engaged in the Flying Handicap at Ashburton. Gladwyn Goes Well Gladwyn (B. W. McDonald) beat Last Link (S. J. Martin) from the six furlongs by three-quarters of a length in Imin 17 2-ssec. Gladwyn ran the last half mile in dashing style to record 48 4-ssec. This run might have .made him favourite for the Rakaia Three-Year-Old Handicap at Ashburton. Roman Maid <A. H. Eastwood) led Mhor (A. J. Stokes) by threequarters of a length finishing five furlongs, the last four in 48 2-ssec. The weights favoured Roman

Maid. Mhor’s run was a satisfactory trial for the Lagmhor Stakes at Ashburton.

Quite Able (C. T. Wilson) and Purr Along (A. H. Eastwood) were abreast a length clear of Coral Lagoon <R. B. Taggart) ending half a mile in 50 3-ssec. Whiohau (R. L. Browning) led his stablemate Triple Event <J. Eeck) by two lengths ending half a mile in 51 3-ssec. Whiohau will start another campaign with a race against the sprinters at Ashburton. He thrived while spelling after a strenuous campaign last season. The stablemates Kent <G. W. Mein) and Awakeri (R. W. Gould) sprinted their half mile in 52 2-ssec. Half Volley (S. J. Martin) followed in 51 4-ssec and Roa (R. L. Browning) took 53 4-ssec. Motueka Fit Motueka (L. McGuire) and Sky rider (R. W. Gould) dashed over five furlongs, and recorded 48 4-ssec for the last four. They stayed on terms all the way. Motueka might make an impression against the sprinters at Ashburton, where he will be making a fresh start.

My Fair Lady (P. J. Kempton) led Malona <N. Eastwood) and Studio (W. Beck) by a neck finishing half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Teaka (E. G. Low) also recorded 50 l-ssec for his half mile. Disorder <W. Hanlin) and Sir Anthony (W. A. Gibbs) sprinted five furlongs, the last four in 51 4-ssec. They stayed on terms to the end, Sir Anthony shaping well for an unraced horse. Montreux (N. Cowles) reeled off half a mile in 50 4-ssec, and the stablemates Search Warrant <B. W. McDonald) and Royal Warrant (N. Eastwood) recorded 50 3-ssec for the last four of five furlongs.

The stablemates Andaman (N. Eastwood) and Anaconda (E. G. Low) sprinted from the half mile on terms in 52 l-ssec. It was not one of the spectacular trials, but both worked well.

So Cold (B. S. Finlayson) and Offend (P. Graham) dashed home from fhe half mile in 50 2-ssec. Offend did well to finish alongside the Sabaean filly. Grand Choice <K. Quayle) jumped four hurdles cleanly, keeping up a fairly strong pace. He is trained by R. Bromby. Bromby now has Gaytana in his team.
