Inter-School Fencing
The first New Zealand secondary schools' fencing tournament will be held in Wellington next weekend. There are some 35 competitors from Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, with possible entries expected from Wanganui, Napier and Hastings. The tournament has been or-' ganised by Mr R. J. Binning, a Wellington schoolteacher . and former Empire Games representative, following the example of Canterbury, which instituted a schools’ provincial tournament some three years ago. It is hoped that the national tournament will also become an annual event.
The competition is to be held in foil only, with separate classes for boys and girls, with teams’ and an individual championship in each class, open to all secondary school pupils who have been entered by their provincial councils.
Canterbury has entered two teams of four which are as follows:—
Boys: J. Hanna (L.H.S.) captain, D. Taylor (L.H.S.), B. L. Mclntyre (8.H.5.), P. Sharp (8.H.5.), A. A. Parder (L.H.S.). Girls: D. Bullivant, (L.H.S.), G. Campbell (L.H.S.), R. Davis (L.H.S). M. Grogan (L.H.S.). . Hanna won the junior provincial championship in 1957, and was runner-up in the intermediate in 1958. The other team members have all represented their schools in provincial tournaments and in addition, B. L. Mclntyre is the new Christchurch Boys' High School senior champion.
