IMMIGRATION OF ASIANS
“Should Be Given Priority”
Asian immigrants were one class of three which should be given priority by New Zealand, the public questions committee told the North Canterbury district annual Methodist Synod last evening. The other classes were dependants of persons already in New Zealand and political and religious refugees. “Quotas of Asians should be extended and made much more liberal.’’ the committee reported. New Zealand had a special obligation to those Asian countries which were near neighbours. “Wo cannot satisfy the needs of South-east Asia, but we can help to create goodwill, carry some of the burden and ease inter-racial tension,” the committee’s report said. The church would undertake to help in absorbing the immigrants in the community if the Government adopted a more liberal policy.
