N.Z. PUBLIC SEAL DEFACED
Governor-General Does Formal Dutv
(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 26.
1 A time-honoured custom was re-enacted today at the meeting of the Executive Council in Parliament Buildings when the Governor-General (Viscount Cobham), armed with a hammer and chisel, formally defaced the New Zealand Public Seal. The act of defacing a replaced seal consists of making two dents on its edging with a chisel, and this was accomplished in two quick blows by Lord Cobham.
The seal, made of steel, will be returned to the Internal Affairs Department and will be kept in the New Zealand archives. The Public Seal defaced by Lord Cobham was the old seal of King George VI. It was replaced at the end of July by the new Queen Elizabeth II seal, for which the New Zealand Government adopted a completely new and less detailed design incorporating the New Zealand coat of arms.
