Three Months’ Gaol Term

LONDON, August 25

Smoking half a cigarette while down the pit cost a rtiiner three months in gaol when he appeared in a Leeds Court today, the “Daily Sketch" reported. The Magistrate said to 24-year-old Raymond Saddington: “In the interests of those who labour in the pits and risk their lives yearly, monthly, daily and monentarily, I shall sentence you to the maximum provided by law.” Saddington had pleaded guilty to having cigarettes and matches down Waterloo Main Colliery. Leeds. The Court was told that a mine deputy smelt cigarette smoke near where Saddington, a belt patrolman, was working. Saddington denied smoking and nothing was found on him when searched nor was anything found in his refuge hole—but smoke was seen and smelt there. Later he was searched again and three cigarettes were found on him—he also admitted to taking three and a half cigarettes and a match down the mine and smoking the half cigarette.
