POLICY ON ALGERIA
Arab Appeal To U.S.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 26. Ten Arab nations asked the United States today to support Algeria’s stand for freedom from France before the United Nations General Assembly next month. Diplomats of the 10 countries told the Secretary of State, Mr Christian Herter, that such support would be in line with the traditional United States policy of “supporting human freedom and the right of self-determination.” In a statement issued after the meeting, the Arabs said it was “high time to end this tragic state of affairs through direct political negotiations." Chiefs of the diplomatic missions of the Arab countries of Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Morocco. Libya. Tunisia, Iraq, Sudan, the United Arab Republic and Jordan saw Mr Herter. Mr Herter made no commitment about what the United States might do on the Algerian issue when it is debated in the United Nations later this year, the State Department announced later.
