IMMIGRANTS IN AUSTRALIA
Value To Industry
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 25.
Tradesmen made up 21 per cent, of the 1,250,000 immigrants Australia had absorbed since World War 11, compared with 16 per cent, in Australia’s work force, said Vice-Admiral Sir John Collins, Australian High Commissioner in New Zealand, addressing the annual dinner of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association last night. Sir John Collins said that for every 1000 migrant dependants there were 108 workers, compared with only 68 in the general population. The New Australians were making an above-average contribution to production, he said. Since the war industrial production had jumped 80 per cent, with onlj’ a 50 per cent, rise in employment figures.
"More people are working harder and more effectively,” he said.
