Astra Impresses At Wingatui

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) DUNEDIN. August 25. Astra, a chestnut colt bv imjorted Astraeus. which cost his Dunedin owner. Mr G. J. Barton. 1300 gns. at the national yearling sales, was one of the most impressive runners In the two-year-old parade at the Otago Hunt meeting on Saturday Astra was first home in the colts' and geldings' section from Spinning Gold, the Callander—Mildeur colt, and the Kurdistan—Soumai gelding Astra has done little fast work, but he jumped out brilliantly and soon had a clear lead on his opponents. There was only half length margins separating the four runners at the finish, but R. J. Skelton appeared to have Astra under a hold near the end. Astra was timed to rim the two furlongs in a shade under 26sec. as against 26 2-ssee taken in the fillies' section. Astra is out of the Salmagundi mare. Sister Sal. a member of a successful Southland family. Sister Sal won eight races and is the dam of Salador. which won more than £4OOO in Australia. I Spinning Gold is a neat chestnut trained by A. N. Didham for his I breeder, Mr J. M. Palmer, of Dunedin He is by the successful sire. Callander, and on his distaff side he is closely related to Astra. Spinning Gold is out of the Lu Zingaro mare. Spinning Maid, from Pro Rata, by Lord Warden from Waiau Maid, the granddam of Astra 1 The Callander—Mildeur two-year-old is a particularly nice colt. He is trained at Oamaru by Jack Hobbs I lor Mr J. The grey is a member of H A Anderton's team Fillies The Anderton stable produced the winner of the fillies’ section in Bert.adine. wnich will race in the colours of Mrs Anderton. Bernadine is bv the colonial sire. Harken, from th • good race mare. White Robe. She ran wide after bounding out of the stalls, but showed brilliance to win easily by two lengths. The Targui—Aethis filly, which finished second, was purchased as a foal at foot with her dam. Aethis. at a sale of bloodstock at Trentham in January. 1958. She is trained at Oamaru by J C.
