MAORI CONCERT PARTY’S SONG
A Maori pao song, sung by the visiting Nga Waka Maori concert party recently at a reception in its honour, was a fitting tribute to the late Mr Te Aritaua Pitama. founder of the Te Ngakau Aroha Maori Catholic youth concert party. The Te Ngatau Aroha group sang songs of welcome for the visitors.
The pao. “E pa to hau he waini i raro,” is a lament in praise of greatness, and has traditional words and music.
Mr Pitama, who founded the annual Catholic hui aranga, was impressed with the high standard of the performances there and instrumental in forming the present touring concert party, whose members come from many parts of New Zealand.
