AMERICA'S LATEST NUCLEAR-POWERED SUBMARINE Skipjack (2850 tons) ties up at Portland, England, on a recent visit. The picture clearly shows the “tail and fins” conning tower which enables her to bank at speed under water. First of her kind the Skipjack is also the prototype for the Dreadnought, Britain's first nuclear-powered submarine, to be completed tn three or four years. The Skipjack is said to have a speed of between 30 and 40 knots, and her nuclear-power plant will keep her going for 70,000 miles without refuelling. She can stay submerged for a month at a time.
