U.S. ANTARCTIC STORES

Pioneer Gem Brings Consignment

Bringing the first shipment this season of materials and supplies for the United States Navy base at Christchurch airport, the cargo ship, Pioneer Gem, arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning from Savannah.

The shipment, of 600 tons, includes large trailers, three oil fuel tanks (the loaded weight of each is 35 tons), a prefabricated aircraft hangar, motor-cars and a small ambulance. All of it is being taken by road transport to Harewood. The vessel also brought 38 tons of general cargo for Lyttelton. The Pioneer Gem has aboard 11 passengers, the majority of them being tourists. The usual run of the Pioneer Gem is between East Coast ports of the United States and Australia* calling at Trinidad and Tahiti. Captain W. L. Anderson, master of the Pioneer Gem, was impressed by the scenic beauty of Lyttelton Harbour. “It is somewhat similar to Hobart,” he said, “but is even prettier.” The Pioneer Gem is to sail tomonow for Brisbane.
