Round Table, racing’s biggest money-winner, got home in world and track record time today to win the Arlington Handicap in a driving finish and boost his earnings to 1,541,889 dollars.
The Australian mare Wiggle, which was second favourite, ran last in the field of nine.
Round Table, carrying 9st 61b. was clocked in 1.53 2-5 for the nine and a half furlongs on turf. The previous track and world mark of 1.54 1-5 was set by Mister Gus on July 28, 1956. Round Table was the 5-4 on favourite, in spite of the handicap of giving from 21 to 30 lb to his eight rivals The five-vear-old was ridden by Willie Shoemaker. Wiggle carried 7st 71b and started at 7-2.
Manassas was second and Noureddin third. The winning margin was a head. Wiggle faded from second in the long turn into the home stretch when Round Table took command and finished far up the track. She had won two out of three previous starts in America, including a victory in the Arlington Matron, at 9 furlongs on grass only a week ago. Wiggle’s jockey Richard Barnett said: “Nothing happened o her She just stopped. “We moved with Round Table head and head on the turn and then she just stopped running I can’t explain it.’’
