Elephant Starts Stampede
KANDY (Central Ceylon). August 21
More than 50 persons were hurt when a baby elephant sent the crowd stampeding last night for the second time in this year’s Buddhist pageant. The caparisoned elephant, moving in procession at the closing stages of the pageant, suddenly faltered and went down on its knees.
The crowds, which only the previous night had witnessed the wild charge of a maddened elephant when 14 persons were killed, panicked and stampeded.
