The new English soccer season began today with some unexpected results. Arsenal was beaten 1-0 at home by the newly-promoted team Sheffield'Wednesday, and the Cup holders, Nottingham Forest, were beaten 2-1 in their away match against Manchester City, a club which just scraped clear of relegation last season.

But the day's highlight was the Chelsea-Preston match, in which 40.000 fans were treated to a hattrick by Chelsea's Inside-right, J. Greaves and a tremendous Preston fight-back which earned the visitors a draw after they had trailed 1-4. At West Bromwich, Manchester United, widely tipped for honours this season, went down 3-2.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, whc are bidding this season for their third successive championship, scored a 1-0 away win over Birmingham

Aston Villa, playing in the second division for only the second time in its 85-year history, began well with a 2-1 win at Brighton. Portsmouth, which joined Aston Villa In first division relegation last year, played a goal-less draw at Middlesborough. Scottish soccer, which began two weeks ago, took the league cup competition a stage further. Hearts, the Cup holders, scored a 2-0 home win over Kilmarnock and Rangers. Scottish league champions, swamped Hibernian. 5-1 at home.
