LONDON, August 22

India, 146 for five in its second inrings. still needed 75 runs to avoid an innings defeat by England when a violent thunderstorm halted play half an hour early on the third day of the fifth and final test match at the Oval today.

Swetman and R. Illingworth each made his highest score in test cricket and their stand of 102 was a record against India for the seventh wicket, beating the 79 by T. G. Evans and R. Jenkins at Leeds in 1952.

Indias second innings opened with a controversial lbw decision against P. Roy off J. B. Statham’s bowling and India appeared to be heading fqr yet another three-day defeat when the fourth wicket fell ar 70.
