New Name For Newspaper
LONDON, August 23. The “Manchester Guardian,” most famous and widely read of Britain’s provincial newspapers, is to change its name to the “Guardian” as from Monday’s edition.
This was announced in the August 22 issue of the newspaper, which ranks with the world’s great daily journals in international prestige and influence. The newspaper also announced that the “Manchester Guardian Weekly” is to retain its title. The “Manchester Guardian” announcement said: “This does not imply a change of policy, it recognises a situation that has existed for some time. The ‘Guardian’ has been a national newspaper for many years.
“Since 1939 circulation in the north-west has slightly more than doubled, while that in other areas has gone up by more than six times. The increase has been especially marked in London. “In 1939 only about 20,000 copies of the ‘Guardian’s’ total circulation of 52.000 were sold more than 20 miles from Manchester. Today, out of an overall 183.000 circulation, 118,000 copies are read outside its home area.”
