TREMORS CONTINUE
Known Dead Now Nine
WEST YELLOWSTONE, August 20. The battered tourist resort of West Yellowstone counted 11 noticeable tremors yesterday, one of them enough to set off a small landslide at Beaver creek, just west of the Hebgen Dam, and send persons scurryng from buildings In addition there were a number of minor shakes, according to Gary Wetzsteon, assistant forest ranger for the Hebgen Lake District, who made the count.
The shakes brought fresh concern about the growing lake behind the major earth slide caused by Monday's earthquake. The rising waters trapped by the massive slide threatened two summer resorts and a summer home. One of the resorts is right below Hebgen Dam. Captain Andrew Champion, of the 41st Air Rescue Squadron, from Hamilton Air Force base, California, said two of the four Air Force helicopters taken to the area would be withdrawn today. He said the remaining two would continue to fly search and survey missions
The Forest Service said all known campers had been removed from the area.
Business in West Yellowstone continued as usual in spite of the unusual lack of tourists. Most restaurants and bars had broken glass and fallen trophy heads. One owner reacted with, a sign reading: “Still Open—Thank God.” A woman injured in last Monday’s landslide died yesterday, bringing the total of known dead to nine. But authorities fear there are more dead under the tremendous falls of rock.
