HELP NEEDED
As part of their degree courses at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, South-east Asian students need to have some practical experience on farms. Professor L. W. McCaskill, associate professor of rural education at the college, who, as adviser to overseas students at the college, is responsible for placing them on farms, is seeking farmers who will be prepared to take one or more of these students during the summer vacation, which runs from November 10 to the end of February.
Under the Colombo Plan each year New Zealand takes from South-East Asia a number of students who study for degrees in agriculture at the two agriculture colleges in this country. Other students from South-East Asia take the agricultural degree courses at their own expense or are sponsored by local governments in Malaya.
The requirements for the degree of bachelor of agricultural science include the provision that students must work on approved farms (sheep, dairy and mixed) for a period of 48 weeks.
All of the students are reasonably skilled in certain farm operations. They all speak English fluently. By special arrangement with the Department of Labour students who are not sufficiently experienced are not required to be paid the full award wage.
Professor McCaskill would be interested to hear from farmers who would be prepared to give these students employment.
