INFANT MISTRESS RETIRES

Miss I. Hayward, Of Mairehau

z Miss Iris Te M. Hayward, infant mistress of the new Mairehau School for the last six years retired recently after nearly 40 years’ service with the Canterbury Education Board. Pupils, staff and associates of the school paid tribute to Miss Hayward for her sterling work and presented her with tokens, of appreciation at several functions.

Establishing the infant department at the new school was difficult work fraught with anxiety, said the chairman of the school committee (Mrs Diana Weir) speaking at one function. Both in the school and in the community, Miss Hayward had been of invaluable assistance in a pioneering effort. The school committee presented Miss Hayward with a coffee percolator and the president of the Parent-Teacher Association (M> M. W. Grey) presented her with a travelling rug on behalf of the association.

The school staff entertained Miss Hayward on the last day ot the term and presented her with a small clock. A cheque and flowers were given to Miss Hayward by the pupils at a break-up function. After graduating from the Christchurch Teachers’ College, Miss Hayward taught at Somerfield, Woolston and Addington For five years during World War II she was relieving head teacher at Omihi and Cust.
