TRAINER FOR UP AND COMING
Delaware Horseman Chosen
(HZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LAUREL (Maryland), August 20. Russell Downes, a veteran horseman from Delaware, has been •elected to train Up and Coming, the New Zealand champion, for his bid for the 100,000-dollar Washington International at Laurel on November 11.
Noel Simpson, Up and Coming’s owner, made the announcement by telephone from his home at Otahuhu. The decision to use an American trainer was made after it was learned that neither G. W. B. Greene, Up and Coming's New Zealand trainer, nor Maurice McCarten, who is handling the horse in Australia, could make the trip to Maryland because of training Commitments in October and November.
John Schapiro, the Laurel racetrack president and originator of the International, announced earlier that Mr Simpson had accepted his invitation to race Up and Coming in the mile and a half, weight-for-»ge grass event.
It was the first official entry for the eighth running of the famous turf event. It will be the first time that New Zealand has had a repre•entative.
