Cricket LOW SCORE BY INDIA
Final Test Begins
At Oval
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 20. Spirited batting by the tailenders, N. S. Tamhane and Surendra Nath, who put on 58 for the eighth wicket —the best stand of the innings'— saved India from a complete rout by England on the first day of the fifth and final cricket test at the Oval today. India, which lost the previous four tests, batted five hours in ideal conditions to make 140—its total of the series—before being all out an hour after tea. By the close England had replied with 35 without loss. Winning the toss, India had every advantage, with hot sunny conditions and an easy-paced pitch, but they were gain disappointing. After losing the opening batsman. P. Roy for 12, they mustered only 47 for two in two hours before lunch. Wickets tumbled rapidly after lunch and the score slumped to 74 for seven before Tamhane and Surendra Nath came together. India averaged only 28 runs an hour. After Roy had gone, N. S. Contractor stayed in for 3hr 20min for 22, being seventh to leave at 74. It was one of the slowest individual test innings on record. Scores:—
