Tax And Unpaid BiHs

The P.A.Y.E. taxation system and the taxation increase were blamed for the present situation where the shortage of work and unpaid bills were worrying small tradesmen In Wellington and Hutt Valley, said Mr W. H. Gillespie (Opposition, Hurunui), in the House of Representatives today when he asked the Minister of Finance (Mr ’Nordmeyer) whether he was prepared to take any steps to correct the position. Mr G. A. Walsh, (Opposition, Tauranga) asked the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) whether he had any comment to make on the report that civil servants formerly employed in New Zealand House and now living in retirement in Britain were asking that their pensions should be increased. Mr B. E. Taiboys (Opposition, Wallace) asked Mr Nash whether he would give support to the wish expressed by the Prime Minister of Canada when he paid that he hoped the conference of Commonwealth Prime Ministers would be held within a few months. Mr W. A. Fraser (Government St. Kilda) asked the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) whether a large deposit of diamotaceous earth known as pozzuolana, at Middlemarch, had been proved suitable for concrete work at Benmore and whether, in order to develop a new industry, special attention would be paid to a thorough investigation of the possibilities when the national resources survey of the region was carried out Mr W. A. Sheat (Opposition, Egmont) asked the Minister of Justice (Mr Mason) whether he would make a full investigation into the allegation that an accused person in the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui had learned the art of safe-cracking at Borstal, and endeavour to introduce come reforms designed to eliminate the possibility of such undesirable results accruing from detention in Borstal institutions. Mr C. G. E. Harker (Opposition, Hawkes Bay) asked the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) whether, in view of the market potential for New Zealand exports in South Africa, the Government would consider the appointment of a trade commissioner there.
