ATOM STATIONS IN ANTARCTIC
First Planned Next Year
LONDON, August 20. The first atomic furnace to heat American Antarctic camps will 'be installed at McMurdo Sound by the end of next year, according to the Commander of the American Antarctic Expedition, Admiral David M. Tyree. Speaking at a conference of Commonwealth survey officers, he said two other atomic plants would take two more years to arrive, and would be flown in by ski-jet aircraft to Byrd Base and the South Pole. The stations would light and heat the United States bases. The stations were expected to be of the same type as used in atomic engines in United States submarines. These were small, but used “souped up” atom fuel, which would burn for several months without recharging. The stations were capable of supplying heat and light to a town of 20,000 people.
