W.E.A.

Sir, —My attention has been drawn to the extraordinary letter of “Moth-eaten” in Thursday’s issue, in which in a confused way he charges the W.E.A. with bringing party politics into many of its activities. This charge will be ludicrous to the many thousand citizens of all parties who have been W.E.A. students, but it may mislead those citizens who have not taken part in W.E.A. activities. The W.E.A. maintains a strictly non-partisan policy in matters of politics and religion, and party politics have never obtruded into its deliberations. Field Club officials assure me that politics have never been discussed at their meetings and they cannot recall a presidential address of five minutes, much less half an hour, as "Moth-eaten” asserts. If “Moth-eaten” was disturbed by a remark at a meeting why not question it openly as expected of a mature citizen rather than make an irresponsible anonymous attack charging the W.E.A. with fostering party politics?—Yours, etc.,

LINCOLN EFFORD. Secretary, Canterbury W.E.A August 14, 1959.
